"Dejan joined my research team as a post-doctoral scholar in 1989. We were investigating research distributed operating systems. Dejan showed superior intelligence, insight and dedication to the work. He stood out as a leader among his peers in the team. He was also a delight to work with, very helpful and courteous."

David Arft, Mechanical Design Engineer - Altex Technologies Corporation and a Soccer Coach in Mountain View

As a new soccer coach I had the pleasure of working with and learning from Dejan coaching high school boys.  These young men have a lot of things asking for their time, so keeping them excited, engaged, focused and fulfilled is a large task that requires balance.  The most important thing that I learned from Dejan is that you must have a strong knowledge of the game, but also be able to relate that back to the players effectively.  Trust and respect must be built between coach and players, but it is also the coach's job to help the players build trust with each other.  I feel that I am a much better coach after working with Dejan and I am grateful for the opportunity.  The skills that make Dejan a great coach; thirst for knowledge, trustworthy, attention to detail, scheduling, teaching, and counselling; are what make him a great leader at any task.

Martin Arlitt, Researcher, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories

“Dejan and I have been colleagues at HP Labs for many years. About a decade ago, Dejan was the manager of the research team I was on. He was very good at identifying research opportunities for the team to work on, as well as finding business contacts to transfer our results. Dejan and I are now on different teams, but he continues to act as a mentor to me. He is heavily involved in the external scientific community, through his involvement in the IEEE and in initiatives like Open Cirrus. More recently, we have worked together on the IEEE Computer Society’s Special Technical Community project. Dejan is very passionate about contributing to the scientific community, and is continuously refining and improving his leadership skills. He has built up an extensive social network in the process, which is critical to the success of the large initiatives he is involved in. I heartily endorse Dejan in his bid to become president of the IEEE Computer Society.” July 25, 2012

Alvin AuYoung, HP Labs, Research Scientist

"I've had the pleasure of working with Dejan during a post-doc at HP Labs. Not only does he bring an incredible amount of depth and experience to the areas of distributed systems and high-performance computing, but I am impressed with his ability to identify problems areas with potential for both research and industry impact. He has demonstrated great vision as a key driver in maintaining (and in laying the original groundwork) for the OpenCirrus test-bed, which continues to be a vital tool for both cloud computing research and internal services for variety of groups at HP Labs. Moreover, he continually provides valuable mentorship to interns, post-docs and junior researchers in the midst of a busy schedule. I am delighted to endorse Dejan for IEEE CS President."

Arutyun I. Avetisyan, Deputy Director, Institute for System Programming of Russian Academy of Sciences

“I know Dejan since 2009 when Russian Academy of Science joined the Open Cirrus cloud computing initiative. During the upcoming years thanks to Dejan's work the Open Cirrus community has grown significantly with new sites in Russia, Asia, US and Europe. The community members are collaborating through the established Open Cirrus summit, which was co-sponsored by IEEE since the 5th summit in Moscow and is now an IEEE workshop because of Dejan's efforts. Dejan is always open for sharing ideas and is ready to give advices that helped us to grow Russian HPC and cloud community around Open Cirrus and Russian University Cluster program. The reason for Dejan's success is not only his endless energy, managing and communication skills, but also Dejan's deep technical knowledge, allowing the community to concentrate on promising research projects. I am sure that these qualities will help Dejan to be a successful and creative IEEE Computer Society President.” August 3, 2012

Jean Bacon, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of British Computing Society

I have worked with Dejan since 1999, first when I was EIC of IEEE Concurrency, and from 2000 to 2007 when EIC of Distributed Systems Online, IEEE's first online-only magazine. Dejan was one of the most active and creative Editorial Board members, leading a team in the Operating Systems area and contributing regular Trend Wars interviews with leaders in many areas of Computing. While visiting Cambridge for EB meetings, he gave talks on his research interests at the Computer Laboratory. He was always interested in technical innovation and able to "make things happen", and was an obvious choice for EIC of Computing Now when it took over from DS Online in 2008. Dejan was also a great Industry Track chair for the ACM/IFIP Middleware conference in 2011.

I'm delighted to endorse Dejan's nomination for IEEE Computer Society President for 2014.

Jean Bacon, Fellow of the IEEE, Fellow of British Computing Society

“Dejan was the manager of a highly-distributed, multi-continent project, in which I worked for a year. Dejan is very business-oriented, and he is very skilled in bringing the best out of the team and individuals. He has amazing coaching abilities, he is very supportive, and has a genuine interest in people. It was a pleasure working with Dejan!” September 22, 2008

Igor Belousov, PhD, Leading Manager of Education and Research Programs, Central and Eastern Europe, HP, Russia

"I have worked with Dejan since 2005 and we have been involved in several important projects together. First one was devoted to creation of the first HP external Next Generation Data Center at Kurchatov Institute (Russia). Dejan played key role in the development and managing joint research agenda for this project from HP Labs side. This project prepared the ground for the second important activity in Russia related to HP-Intel-Yahoo Cloud Computing Initiative called “Open Cirrus”. Dejan as a Managing Director of Open Cirrus Consortia played a key role in inviting the partners from Russian Academy of Sciences to the project and has been instrumental in managing joint activities with the Russian cluster which comprises the best HPC research organizations in Russia – Joint Supercomputer Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Kurchatov Institute. Dejan was an organizer of the very successful international Open Cirrus Workshop in Russia in 2010 which attracted the best researchers and organizations working on HPC and Cloud Computing from Russia and all over the world.

I strongly support the nomination of Dejan for IEEE CS Presidency on behalf of HP Russia, our partners JSCC RAS, ISP RAS, Kurchatov Institute and other research organizations from Russia participating in multiple projects with HP and HP Labs."

Dragan Bogojevic, Ph.D., IEEE Member, ICT-INFO Belgrade, Serbia

I was first introduced to Dejan Milojicic in the fall of 1978 when we began to study School of Electrical Engineering in Belgrade (ETF) and I have had the privilege to be his friend until the present day. Every generation has the best student, a dominant leader, a loyal friend who never lets you down; our generation has had all of  it in one man - Dejan. After ETF, in the R&D Mihajlo Pupin Institute, leading the group for the transactional operation system and system software, he was in the "dream team" that developed, produced and sold the most PC-oriented computer systems in the history of Institute. Like every talent, he quickly reached a PhD and was drafted in the U.S.... Dejan is an example of men who is disciplined and responsible to himself and to others, ready to listen and communicate with people, but brave to speak up, introduce changes, and do what is right. If IEEE CS needs wise and courageous, experienced and energetic leader, Dejan Milojicic is the right choice. September 17, 2012

Professor Rajkumar Buyya, Director, Cloud Computing and Distributed Systems Lab, University of Melbourne

I know Dejan for over 10 years in various capacities. As Chair/Co-Chair of IEEE Committees such as the TCSC, I have interacted with him several times in developing cooperation between various related committees. I have found him to be very +ve person and easy to work with. He always worked in interest of members of the IEEE CS. This year (i.e., in 2012) I have been actively working with him as a Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems in the area of Cloud computing. He actively offered his services in managing reviews and coordinating with expert reviewers world-wide and always ready to help other co-editors whenever required. I continue to be impressed with his volunteer leadership and services for the benefit of whole computer science community, in particular activities of IEEE.

Zhongtang Cai, Oracle

It’s my honor and great pleasure to endorse Dr. Dejan Milojicic for the position of the IEEE Computer Society President. Dejan and I collaborated on a research project which turned out to be very fruitful and it’s only one of the many successful collaborations between Dejan and my research lab. Through my own experience, I have witnessed the reasons for these successes: Dejan’s exceptional leadership, the ability to bring talented people together (even that they could be of quite different types of personalities), finding the strength of each individual, being very innovative and visionary, and making the collaboration successful and pleasant for all. Besides that, Dejan is also a very fine and responsive person with lots of energy. I strongly believe that Dejan’s vision, passion, management skills and ability to unite people together will make him serve the position well and even bring the IEEE Computer Society to the next new level. I’d be happy to endorse him without any reservations.

Lee C. Chang, Ph.D., Professor and Interim Chair, Computer Engineering Department, San Jose State University, San Jose, California

Dr. Dejan Milojicic is one of the founders of our MS in Software Engineering with Emphasis in Cloud Computing and Virtualization Program.  During the past 3 years, he has worked jointly with faculty members to develop program curriculum and teach classes.  Has has demonstrated his organizational leadership, technology expertise, teaching excellence, and research capability.  I full-heartedly endorse Dr . Milojicic to be the President of IEEE Computer Society.

P Chang, Executive Director, Walter S. Johnson Foundation

“I write to endorse Dejan Milojicic's candidacy for the Presidency of IEEE. I come from another field (law) and know of IEEE solely by reputation. And I know Dejan as our daughter's long-time soccer coach. Yet I believe that Dejan has the competence, integrity and curiosity to be a great president of IEEE. In regional soccer, most coaches are parents, drafted for the position. I was one. So was Dejan. And his preferred sport was/is basketball, not soccer. Nevertheless, having agreed to coach, he attended clinics, scouted games, and advanced both his technical knowledge and his team management skills far beyond any soccer coach that I have known. He did this at his own expense and on his own time, building competence by his hard work and his intelligently applied experience. Because many parents live (again) through their children, they exult when their children win. It's far harder when children lose. Teammates and parents criticize the coach and each other. Coaches change their styles and tactics to win something, anything. We were part of many losing teams. We returned, knowing that we'd lose again, because Dejan did not put his ego or his need to win first. He put teaching and team play first, life lessons that grew our daughter up. Foremost, Dejan does not do what is easy or expedient. He does what's right. Again and again. Importantly for a presidency and for any leader, Dejan is curious. His professional history confirms this at every turn. As a coach, he constantly experiments with different drills, skillsets, combinations and coaching techniques, looking for the teaching moments that galvanize a group. Throughout a game, he looks for positive progress, one of the hardest things to spot in a developing player on teams with mixed abilities. And he spends time testing and confirming what he sees, combining a great coach's memory with his deep knowledge of the game. Soccer isn't life. And kids grow up and find other interests. For our daughter and for our family, Dejan's leadership remains a touchstone for the times and places that we saw a child grow up under the firm hand, clear eye and great intelligence of a born leader. I'm proud to endorse Dejan Milojicic. IEEE will be proud to have him as your President.” September 29, 2012

Andrew Chien, University of Chicago

Dejan is a great organizer, able to organize and motivate teams that cross organizations and have varied objectives. He did an extraordinary job nurturing and driving the Open Cirrus Consortium across Intel, Yahoo!, and HP... August 24, 2012

Nigel Cook, Chief Technologist/Strategist, HP

“I have known and collaborated with Dejan for 10 years at HP and worked on a number of projects, most recently associated with Cloud computing and the Open Cirrus project. Dejan has great technical and inter-personal skills, and works with a broad range of engineers and technologists, both providing insightful individual contributions, as well as mentoring and developing engineers around him. In particular, the Open Cirrus project, now an IEEE workshop because of Dejan’s efforts is a great example of his ability to work with leaders across the world to enable the realization of his broad vision. Dejan also develops engineering talent around him, from teaching at local colleges, to mentoring engineers at many levels with HP, his combination of knowledge, energy and friendly approach leads to the success of those around him. His broad vision, initiative, boundless energy and out reach to the engineering community are essential qualities for a successful IEEE Computer Society president.” August 8, 2012

Yong Cui, Associate Professor, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China

It is my great pleasure to endorse Dejan for the President of the IEEE Computer Society. Although Dejan is well known in my research area, I personally knew and worked with Dejan since last year as the guest editors on IEEE TPDS specially issue on Cloud computing. We received a lot of papers on this SI and Dejan worked very hard to handle the papers timely and find good reviewers. Sometimes when we (GEs) discussed some issues upon this SI, Dejan always gave us very useful comments with detailed reasons based on his rich experience on the research work. Moreover, Dejan came to visit Tsinghua University this year. During the long talk with him, I found that he is not only a senior research with outstanding technical contribution to the research area, but also a very good pioneer in the research community. He is always very open to talk with all junior researchers friendly and patiently on both research directions and research methods. I believe we junior researchers can learn a lot from Dejan. Therefore, it would be my greatest honor to endorse Dejan's nomination for the President of IEEE Computer Society, 2014. With his enormous influence, I believe more and more young researchers would like to join the society and will receive a lot of benefits.

Maria Daehler, MD/mom

"Dejan is a wonderful soccer coach who is very committed to positively and constructively supporting young teens in performing at their best in soccer.   He is highly organized and communicates his plan for the team in direct and empowering ways with a focus on team work, collaboration and each player taking responsibility for their position.   His joy of the sport is readily shared with the teens in a fun and engaging process that drives them to do more.  Pre-game meetings are usually insightful and foreshadowing of what often unfolds.  And, whether the team wins or loses, it is a delight listening in to the post game shared discussion of what went well and where people can improve.  The kids leave wanting to come back for more and I, as a parent, feel blessed to have a great mentor for my child." October 2012

Russ Daniels, VP & CTO, HP Enterprise Services (colleague)

“I worked with Dejan over many years at HP. He contributed to and led many research projects highly relevant to the businesses I supported. He was always an excellent research partner, actively soliciting input from the business and customers, sharing proposed initiatives early, validating his understanding of our perspectives, clarifying his own, and adapting as needed. This necessary interaction continued throughout the project life cycle, maximizing its impact.” July 24, 2012.

Dilma Da silva  Researcher & Manager, IBM Research

"I've witnessed the fantastic work Dejan has done for many of our technical communities. I've collaborated with him in the context of several conferences and I had the chance to discuss his strategic vision to increase the relevance of some of our technical forums. Dejan will be a great leader for IEEE. He has my full hearted endorsement."

Steve Diamond, General Manager, Industry Standards Office, and Global Standards Officer, Office of the CTO, EMC

Dejan Milojicic is an internationally-known computer science expert. I’ve known Dejan for many years, shared the dais with him at IEEE cloud computing conferences, and frequently sought his advice on the IEEE Cloud Computing Initiative. Dejan is an oft-requested speaker at cloud computing-related events, and recently gave a keynote at IEEE CLOUD 2012 where I moderated the cloud computing standards panel. He is a valued IEEE Computer Society volunteer, was the founding EIC of IEEE Computing Now, and is a prolific author. Dejan is managing director of the HP Labs Open Cirrus Cloud Computing Testbed.” August 19, 2012

Zoran Dimitrijevic, Google

“I strongly endorse Dejan in his campaign to become 2014 president of the IEEE Computer Society. I've first met Dejan in 2000 when I was a PhD candidate at UC Santa Barbara - and then spent a Summer in HP Labs as an intern working in Dejan's research group. Based on this collaboration we later published two research papers. Since then, Dejan and his family become my dear friends. Dejan is an innovative computer scientist, motivated manager, and overall a great person - I am confident that he is capable of being a successful president of the IEEE Computer Society.” August 29, 2012

Fred Douglis, Past Editor in Chief, IEEE Internet Computing, R&D at EMC Backup Recovery Systems Div

“I give Dejan Milojicic my strongest recommendation in his candidacy for IEEE-CS President. I've known Dejan for about 20 years and worked with him in many capacities. We met when he was completing his PhD in the area of process migration and compared his work to my earlier work in this area. This led to an ACM Computing Surveys article and an edited collection of papers on mobility, including process migration. Over the years he and I have both served as technical committee chairs and on editorial boards. I was editor in chief of Internet Computing when Dejan became the inaugural editor of Computing Now and he has served on the IC editorial board. Basically, Dejan has some amazing unlimited supply of energy. There is no other way I can explain his accomplishments. He has led numerous efforts at IEEE-CS, especially most recently as a member of its Board of Governors. He also has been extremely successful in his "day job" at HP and elsewhere. From our earliest collaborations on the survey article and book, and everything I've seen in the CS, I can tell that when Dejan puts his mind to something he accomplishes it. I know several of the recent presidents well and respect all of them, but I hope I don't offend them when I say I cannot think of a better qualified candidate... ever.” July 28, 2012

Joe Drake, Director of Engineering and Operations at Coherent

I had the pleasure of working with Dejan in coaching a team of select soccer players during the AYSO Spring Season 2012. Dejan has a talent for recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of each player and using this assessment towards developing the player for better performance both as an individual and as a team player. He devises practice and game strategies geared for enthusiasn, motivation, and team success. The players on this team showed considerable improvement over the course of the season and had great fun in the process. September 26, 2012

Liana L. Fong,  ACM Distinguished Engineer, Manager of Distributed System & Resource Management, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center

It is my honor to endorse Dejan Milojicic’s nomination as the IEEE Computer Society President Elect 2013.  I have known Dejan for more than a decade through professional activities in the computer industrial.    We have developed our careers in different companies but in similar computing areas: OS, distributed system and resource management, utility and cloud computing, etc.  Thus, we have maintained professional connection: he visited my group at IBM Research and I invited him to serve on technical program committees.  It is unnecessary for me to elaborate Dejan’s extensive services to the computing community throughout his professional life, but to say that it has been my great pleasure to know and interact with Dejan for his generous support and timely execute of commitments.

Marisa Gill, Associate Professor, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona

“I'm very pleased to endorse and support Dr. Dejan Milojicic's nomination for IEEE CS President. I first met Dejan in early 2001, as a consequence of doing research in a closely related subject. Since then I have known Dejan both as a colleague and a friend. Every time I have asked him for help with papers, he has always given me valuable advice and insights, as well as encouragement to pursue more ambitious goals in my research. His gift for working with people, his empathy, his ability to empower and involve young people and colleagues all around the world, his generosity with his time and his capacity and enthusiasm for initiating new projects, make him the ideal choice for this position.” September 13, 2012

Andrzej Goscinski, Professor, Deakin University

“I give Dejan Milojicic my strongest recommendation in his candidacy for IEEE-CS President. I have know him as an excellent leader, team manager and researcher. Dejan will provide great services as IEEE-CS President. I recommend Dejan very strongly and unreservedly!” August 3, 2012

Atsuhiro Goto, Professor, Graduate School of Information Security Institute of Information Security, Japan

It is my great pleasure to recommend Dejan for IEEE Computer Society President. I worked closely with Dejan at IEEE CS Board of Governors. Dejan is always very creative, active and devoted to leading many projects in Computer Society, especially his contributions to cloud computing are outstanding. He is willing to work jointly with regional communities as well, which must be very important to revitalize whole IT world. Thus, I'm delighted to endorse Dejan's nomination for IEEE Computer Society President for 2014.

Suzanne Gueydan, Former AYSO Soccer Coach & Vice President, Finance, of Education Management, Inc.

I've known Dejan for almost 10 years, and we spent a few years coaching together for girls high school AYSO soccer teams.  His knowledge of the game and skill on the field made him a great technical coach, but it was his love of the game and enjoyment of the kids that made him a fantastic all-around coach.  Dejan and I had similar philosophies - that we were there to help the kids do more than just learn a game.  We were there to encourage being part of a team and gaining confidence in themselves and their abilities.  Don't get me wrong, Dejan liked to win, but it was clear that it wasn't the only reason we were out there.  Plus, coaching with Dejan was just plain fun.  He was a true pleasure to work with on the field, and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Salim Hariri, Professor, University of Arizona

I am pleased to strongly recommend Dejan for the president of the IEEE Computer Society 2014. I know Dejan for many years and through a variety of professional meetings. During the last year or so, the steering committee of the International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC 2012) selected unanimouslyDejan to be the General Chair for ICAC 2012. I have led the organization of several well known ACM/IEEE international conferences, Dejan leadership and organization for ICAC 2012 were outstanding when I compare his performance with other meetings that I am involved in. The deep community support and respect toDejan and his organizational skills and leadership are all strong testimonial of his ability to lead the IEEE Computer Society to a higher ground of achievements. As a co-founder and co-chair of the steering committee of the ICAC conference, I was amazed for Dejan’s strong leadership of and the wide support from our autonomic computing community in particular, and the computer science in general. All these activities are strong testimony to his excellent leadership and the strong community support for his work, and because of that, I strongly support his candidacy for the president of the IEEE Computer Society.  October 2012.

Hermann Härtig, Professor CS, Technical University Dresden

"It is great to hear that you are candidate for President of IEEE Computer Society and I seriously hope you will get elected! Our acquaintance  goes back to your time as a PhD student in Kaiserslautern and from then we never lost contact. It has been always inspiring for me and my students here at TU Dresden (Note: TUD is selected "Elite-University" in a high-level German competition) to discuss technical and non-technical matters with you. I hope you make it, because I think you are the kind of person that is needed in such positions: You have proven your excellent technical skills numerous times, you possess the leadership skills, and I know you are more than  "only" a technical person. Good luck with your candidacy!"

Kerstin Helbing, German/FOS Teacher at Gunn High School, Palo Alto, CA

I am the German teacher in Palo Alto Unified School District, and I got to know Dejan as a father of two daughters, both taking German. From 2004-2009, Dejan coached our Transatlantic Soccer Bridge team, which competed against co-ed teams of German students from other high schools from the Western states. Dejan was always motivating, highlighting students' strengths instead of focusing on their weaknesses. He valued commitment and responsibility in a player, underlying the importance of team building, besides developing individual skills. By the end of each season, Dejan would have humorous, but positive individual certificates for every single player. In 2009, our final game, and the end of the event for Northern California, our team would win the tournament. The grand prize was a dinner for the whole team in a German restaurant. What an event. I am sure every participant will remember the practices and games that Dejan conducted as our coach vividly. September 21, 2012

Steve Ko, Assistant Professor at SUNY Buffalo

It is my great pleasure and honor to endorse Dejan for the presidency of IEEE Computer Society. I have no doubt that he will set a vision and directions, and lead IEEE Computer Society to its new era. I first met Dejan when I was a graduate student at UIUC. He interviewed me and hired me as an intern for the summer of 2006, and became my mentor for my internship. During that summer, his comprehensive and wide view towards research has opened my eyes to see what research is really about. Although I was slow in my progress during the internship, he was patient enough to guide me with more time and efforts. I saw him as a person who can provide a high-level vision for a project as well as low-level details of small steps. Since I really enjoyed working with him during that summer, I collaborated with him on two projects and invited him as one of my PhD dissertation committee members. Needless to say, he provided me with invaluable advice and insights on my dissertation research. His advice always gave me new viewpoints that I missed initially, which helped me refine my thesis tremendously. These experiences of mine over the past several years with Dejan give me confidence that Dejan is the right person for the presidency of IEEE Computer Society and I endorse him for that.

Fabio Kon, Professor University of São Paulo, Brazil

I've known Dejan's work for over a decade but it was only 3 years ago that I had the opportunity to start to work directly with him. We have been collaborating in a joint research project among HP Labs, HP Brazil, and the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Dejan is extremely competent when it comes to scientific and technological research and the collaboration we had with him helped to improve the quality of the research we were carrying out and also to point to new directions and challenges that we should seek. Dejan's commitment to our joint work was awesome as, in multiple occasions, he didn't hesitate to spend several hours of his time to review the papers and reports produced by our graduate students. In addition to the technical contributions, Dejan is always proactively looking for new ways of working together and proposing new endeavors seeking to produce new interesting results for the entire community.

Endorsement for Dr. D. Milojicic concerning his nomination for the IEEE President 2014:

Dr. Milojicic was a graduate student in my research group on operating systems/distributed systems at the University of Kaiserslautern from 1991 to 1993 Under the 30 Ph. D. students working under my supervision from 1980 to 2007 he was definitely the most outstanding researcher I worked with. He is an extremely well organized person and hard worker which enables him  to manage an almost unlimited workload. It is not surprising that he finished his Ph. D. thesis in the record time of 2 years and two months and still published 3 conference papers during that time period. He was extremely good in motivating students for the topic of his Ph.D. thesis and supervising them during their bachelor and Master theses. After Dr. Milojocic left Kaiserslautern after his Ph.D. studies we always stayed in contact. Dr. Milojicic visited Kaiserslautern several times and gave well received talks at the University of Kaiserslautern about his actual research projects. Dr. Milojicic has strong leadership capabilities which qualify him extraordinary for the position of the IEEE president.

Eric Ponteri, Pilot at America

I had the pleasure of coaching the Palo Alto AYSO BU19 soccer team for 4 seasons with Dejan; I was an Assistant Coach when Dejan was the Head Coach. We also took one of our teams to the AYSO National games in Florida. Dejan was a very dedicated coach, even though he had no children on the team. He was a great leader for the coaches and the players. He brought with him a great knowledge of the game, but his best attribute as a coach was his ability to mange different personalities and get the most out of the team, which can be challenging with 17 and 18 year old boys. He had the right balance of being strict and making practice fun and was a good mentor and role model. He was a very committed coach and I learned a considerable amount from him about coaching that has been very influential on my style as a Head Coach.

Since that introduction, I have been honored to serve as an associate editor for Computing Now. Dejan’s strong leadership coupled with his tenacity enables him to make things happen and see them through. It is a testament to his skills in picking the right projects, assembling the right teams and garnering the necessary support within the IEEE.  His dedication is infectious. At Computing Now, he exemplifies the slogan – just do it; under his stewardship Computing Now explored new models for digital publishing and online academic communities.   Dejan is an excellent choice for President of the IEEE Computer Society, and particularly in these times when bold steps need to be taken to keep pace with new uses of technology to bring scientists together and to put their work at the forefront. No doubt, the IEEE Computer Society will benefit from his vision, experience, broad technical knowledge, and endless energy. August 8, 2012

“It is an honor to recommend Dejan for the position of IEEE Computer Society President 2014. I reported to Dejan when I interned in the summer of 2005 at HP Labs. Dejan was a great manager, mentor and excellent technologist. He provided key insights into the technology that his team was developing and helped me bridge the gap between my doctoral work and the research work of his team which helped to create an excellent collaborative effort. This culminated in the filing of patents and further collaboration between his team and my research group at University of Illinois. During my internship, I learnt extensively from Dejan about corporate research work, the importance placed on relevance of research work to product development and bridging academic and industrial gap in research. I greatly appreciated Dejan's vision for his team, his involvement in the work and progress of every team member (including his summer interns) and his constant constructive feedback to his team, which reverberated in the morale of every team member and the team-spirit that every member exhibited. I benefitted heavily from working so closely with Dejan and his team. In addition, Dejan would be extremely patient and understanding while hearing my feedback and addressed my concerns throughout my internship. Even after 7 years I still cherish the experience I had working for Dejan and his team. I am delighted to know that Dejan has been nominated for the position of IEEE Computer Society President 2014. I don't know any other candidate who would be better deserving than Dejan for this position. I sincerely wish him the very best !” August 12, 2012

It is my great pleasure to endorse Dejan for the role of the President of the IEEE Computer Society. I have known Dejan since our university days. Even then he stood out as an exceptional personality and a brilliant student. Throughout my career, but also in private, he was the person to whom I addressed the first in the crucial moments, when I made tough decisions, but also to exchange ideas and for any kind of professional support . I have always been inspired and motivated, as well as many other people, with his endless energy, a clear vision and commitment to the highest goal. He has my strongest support in this run September 27, 2012

Prof. Dr. Dusan Starcevic, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, University of Belgrade, Serbia

I am professor and head of the laboratory at the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, at the University of Belgrade. I worked with Dejan at the “Mihajlo Pupin” Institute in late eighties, indirectly managing Dejan, as a technical director of the TIM program. Dejan only started his professional career at that time and already then demonstrated creativity and attention to detail. For example, he was able to introduce new programming models, enabling more application code to fit into the limited 8086 memory space. When he transitioned to UNIX and the 386 family of computers he became the team lead. Even though early in his career, I noticed leadership by example, effective communication skills, and no fear to be a catalyst of change. I stayed in communication with Dejan throughout his career, equally being impressed with his publication record and his managerial growth. Dejan always had an ambition to lead, but also capacity to deliver. I believe that he is the right person for these times of technological and economic changes, capable of innovation and putting it to a good use for the better of our society. Dejan also has a unique blend of industrial background with exceptionally strong academic record – ideal for building a bridge between academic and industrial society members. I have no reservations to provide a strong endorsement for Dejan’s appointment to IEEE Computer President.

Vanish Talwar, Principal Engineer, HP Labs

It is my great pleasure to endorse Dejan for the President of IEEE Computer Society. I have known Dejan for over a decade now and over the years, he has been my mentor, manager, PhD committee member, and colleague as he has helped me grow from a newbie in research to my present position as a principal researcher at HP Labs. Dejan has a great combination of strong technical and managerial skills and I have seen him use it very effectively across numerous projects I have worked with him in mobile computing, IT automation, data center resource management, adaptive monitoring, OpenCirrus, and cloud management.  I have also found him to very  driven and collaborative and I have personally worked with him in projects where he fostered key collaborations not only with other teams within HP but also numerous universities, standards organizations, and other research labs (Intel Labs, A-Star). He has also taken a special effort to develop relations internationally and to also reach out to organizations in Europe, Asia, and South America. Dejan is also very active in the academic community and has participated in various key organizational roles in multiple conferences. As an example, most recently, Dejan was the General Chair of ICAC 2012 of which I was the Progam Co-chair. In this role, I had to work very closely with Dejan for the conference and it was amazing to see Dejan’s wonderful organizational skills and leadership that made ICAC 2012 a great success. I also know from my personal interactions with Dejan how excited he is about the initiatives he has started within IEEE on Computing Now and IEEE special technical communities and also on other new ones he has in mind for IEEE Computer Society.

It is truly hard to find someone with a match of Dejan’s experience and a combination of vision, courage, commitment, and organization skills that he possesses. I fully endorse Dejan’s nomination for IEEE Computer Society President.

"Dear Dejan,

Considering all your abilities, in the first line your professional competence, vision, enthusiasm, energy and leadership, I am delighted to endorse you for the IEEE CS President. Our collaboration started in the early 90s in Belgrade/Serbia and was continued in Germany, at the TU Kaiserslautern, where both of us were DAAD Scholars and where you finished your PhD Thesis. At that time I was impressed with your enormous energy and a unique passion for a high quality research. Our contacts were also intensive in the period when you lived in the USA and I in Germany. You were strong enough to cope with the highest intellectual and practical professional challenges posed by HP Labs. Simultaneously, the quality and quantity of your publications reached a very impressive level (one of your reports has been cited next to 1000 times!). Since I have moved back to Academia and started exploring the novel concepts of Smart Grids in the UK, your contributions in the field of Cloud Computing inspired me to build skeletons for new concepts which will probably change the paradigms of monitoring, control and protection of future power networks. At the same time I could notice your fantastic abilities to motivate people and to foster the synergy as the optimal collaboration model. I have strong hopes and I am convinced that you will be the new IEEE CS President. Good luck!

I have known Dejan for almost 30 years since he joined Pupin Institute, Belgrade, where we were colleagues as junior research and development engineers. From the very beginning he expressed unparalleled energy end enthusiasm in this vivid research community evidenced through uncountable overtime office hours. He didn't hesitate in taking significant responsibilities in large projects and shortly deserved high respect from senior members. He also constantly sought for acquiring more knowledge and, beside his work at Institute, he finished his MSc at Belgrade University. The strive for new challenges led him abroad where he finished his PhD and achieved an impressive professional success. At the same time, Dejan is an extremely sociable and communicative person who used to collect his colleagues and friends at that time in the backyard of his old family house where we spent many enjoyable hours. He was also very engaged in basketball and tennis activities at that time. I was very pleased to hear that he is a candidate for President of the IEEE Computer Society. Knowing him closely from his early days, I am quite sure that he has all the qualities needed for this respectable position and that he is capable of giving a distinguished contribution to this society and entire community. Therefore, I express my strongest endorsement for his candidacy.

Sanja Vranes, Scientific Director, "Mihajlo Pupin" Institute, Belgrade, Serbia

“I am Scientific Director of the “Mihajlo Pupin” Institute and a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Belgrade. I have known Dejan during 1983-1991, while we were both R&D engineers and team leaders at the Institute. Dejan was responsible for the system software for the family of TIM computers that were broadly deployed across ex-Yugoslavia and parts of the Eastern Europe. These sales represented large fraction of Institute’s revenue at that time. It required creativity, persistency and a lot of skills to develop these computers grounds up and at the robustness levels to serve transactional customers, such as banks and post offices. Dejan demonstrated leadership, inventiveness, and cross-team collaboration skills that I can see he put to substantial use in his later career. Beside R&D, Dejan paid a lot of attention to publishing and continuing education, finishing his MSc. on the subject of transactional system software he earlier transferred to the market. The next project he pursued was porting of the UNIX operating system onto the follow-on family of 386-based computers, which eventually led to his PhD thesis. I strongly believe that Dejan has vision, passion, and energy to be effective as the president of IEEE Computer Society and I endorse him without any reservations. As a member of IEEE Computer Society and published author, I am looking forward to Dejan taking IEEE Computer Society to new levels” July 30, 2012
